The Vital Study Skills System
The Vital Study Skills System is a systematic, research-based approach to learning study skills.
- Activities are used to stimulate your prior knowledge and build your knowledge base. We call this step prereading. Prereading helps you become more active and engaged in classroom lectures and increases reading speed and comprehension.
- You learn how to structure the material as you listen to lectures and read the texts. The structuring phase helps you internalize the information and build your own mental models.
- The information is encoded in your long-term memory by a structured approach to spaced reviews and self-tests.
- Once you have stored the information in your long-term memory, you are able to easily access and apply what you have learned. This step is typically demonstrated in examinations and clinical work.
Supporting strategies are also addressed.
- Time management
- Setting up your study area
- Improving concentration
- Using productive self-talk to reduce anxiety
