The Vital Study Skills System
The Vital Study Skills System is a systematic, research-based approach to study skills.
- Activities are used to stimulate students’ prior knowledge and build their knowledge base. We call this step prereading. Prereading helps students become more active and engaged in classroom lectures and increases reading speed and comprehension.
- Students learn how to structure the material as they listen to lectures and read the texts. The structuring phase helps students internalize the information and build their own mental models.
- The information is encoded in their long-term memory by a structured approach to spaced reviews and self-tests.
- Once the students have stored the information in their long-term memory, they are able to easily access and apply what they have learned. This step is typically demonstrated in examinations and clinical work.
Supporting strategies are also addressed.
- Time management
- Setting up a study area
- Improving concentration
- Using productive self-talk to reduce anxiety
