Our Services

Vital Study Skills Workshops provide the opportunity for students to acquire immediate and life-long learning skills. One immediate benefit of these skills can be decreased faculty workload. Students who are prepared for classes require less individual instruction.

Students are taught how to take charge of their own learning.

Workshop Content

Student Participants learn how to:

  • manage their time
  • get more out of lectures
  • organize their notes
  • improve long-term memory
  • develop critical-thinking skills
  • increase concentration
  • reduce test anxiety
  • prepare for exams


Workshop Structure

TIME

We offer two versions of the workshop, a two-day version and a multi-week version.

  • The two-day workshop meets from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. The days may either be consecutive or one week apart. Time is included for lunch and morning and afternoon breaks.

  • The multi-week workshop meets weekly for two to four-hour sessions for several consecutives weeks.

 
FORMAT

Workshop format includes a combination of individual work, group work, instructor presentation and group discussion.

 
PARTICIPANTS

The workshop format requires at least one instructor for every 20 students. Forty students is the maximum number of participants for each workshop.

 
CONTENT

The material covered will primarily include the topics addressed in the study skills books written by Straker & Kelman. See list in the section above.

 

Vital Study Skills Workshop Packages

Standard Workshop – Choose this option if your organization has a shortage of the resources (time and people) necessary for on-site implementation of the workshop, but wants involvement in the planning of the workshop and is interested in the results the workshop produces. Some organizations use this option as a pilot to determine if they would like to invest in the full certification process.

Customized Workshop – Choose this option if your organization would like for students to practice on materials that will be used in their own classes. Prereading and/or Reading modules will be customized for your institution. This option also includes more detailed planning and follow-up.

Workshop + Facilitator Certification – This option is for organizations that want to bring this study skills workshop in-house as part of an ongoing retention program. Faculty and administration are prepared to master the strategies needed to effectively implement the Vital Study Skills Workshop and integrate it into their overall retention program.
